I thought Emma's experiment was amusing and certainly proved a point, but to a certain extent it was also unfair because people simply develop different posting habits on boards with different styles. I mean, if I directly translated a thread from the new DB (where a message doesn't have to have a title) to this format, I would end up with a whole thread of messages with (no title) and could thus also "prove" that this format is confusing and doesn't work.
Anyway, what was I wondering? Yes, right... I don't want to appear to be the great phpbb advocat or anything there, but there's one argument in this discussion that I never understood: What do people find so confusing about having a whole thread on one page? I always see the argument that you can't tell who's replying to what, but most boards of that type have a quote function these days to address this issue, and even if there isn't one it's really not that hard to address the person you're replying to in your first sentence, like people often do in IRC for example. (I find it ironic that the people who seem to complain the most about how "confusing" phpbbs are, are also the ones who use IRC without problems, even though it's essentially the same only with shorter messages and a hundred times the speed.) So, what gives? ~ Iris
