Computer program error metaphor revisited:
There is a bug in the code. In this case, the patch doesn't rewrite the code, it adds a new function. This new function doesn't solve the problem, it merely avoids it. The bug is still there, unaddressed. You just don't care, because once you get used to the new function you don't run into it as often. It's like constantly tupoing a certain word, but instead of learning the correct spelling, you rephrase the sentence to not use it at all.
