I'm not saying it's idiotic I'm saying I think it's clumsy and ineffective by comparison. Not to use a metaphor, since that seems to only cause more misunderstanding, the problem still exists because it's not completely solved. Quoting a bit of text can still lead to confusion. A popular thread with lenghty exchanges and several divertions would be extremely difficult to quote and complicated to read; better to add each reply where it follows naturally and you can see immediately how it fits in. I don't see any cons in this system, nor do I see the advantages of the phpbb style.
