The other point of my experiment was to show how an unthreaded board is incompatible for a forum where we go off at tangents.
Take this thread for example. Say I'm interested in Josh's original question, but don't care at all about Nemi and Aaron's discussion. I would have to keep opening the thread when there was a new post because I don't know if it's responding to Nemi/Aaron or the original post. With a tree format you can ignore subthreads you're not interested in. Which is why it's common (in my experience) in busy phpbb forums to be very strict about staying "on-topic" and if the SB ever started doing that... I would probably leave. Because the anarchic attitude to being on-topic is one of the reasons I've always loved the SB.
And on a purely practical level, I've never used a phpbb/ubb forum that actually *correctly* jumped you to the latest post you've not read. Scrolling up to find out when you were last there is bloody irritating.
Plus you end up with pagination of replies, which means clicking back and forth and scrolling up and down.
