He did say, "When you're done, is this going to look like a military haircut, or a real haircut?" If her definition of a "real haircut" is a military haircut, she should have questioned his usage of the term at this point. Then, after her response, he stated, "I want to make sure I get a civilian haircut instead of a military one." At this point, before much of the haircutting was done, he had indicated that he had wanted a civilian haircut, and had distinguished that this was the "real haircut" he had indicated previously, by differentiating it from the military haircut in the same way.
True, he did not indicate exactly what he wanted, but it is quite clear that whatever it was, it was not a military haircut. When she explained that when someone asks her for a real haircut, she thinks they mean a military one, she was obviously trying to cover her mistake.
