Most of this chapter was a reievw for me. HPV is a virus that, like most viruses, shows no symptoms until well past the day of infection. With over 100 strains to worry about, it's no wonder that so many people have been exposed. Since there is no cure, prevention is the only way to protect yourself from infection. I have looked into the HPV vaccines, as my daughters are approaching the age of where I need to make a decision. Gardasil does only cover four strains of the virus (Cervarix only covers two of the strains in the Gardasil vaccine). However, two of those strains are known to cause cervical cancer, and the other two are highly suspected.I am not surprised at all by the STD numbers in this state. The public is told to protect themselves all the time: by health professionals, peer groups, and the media. It is unfortunate that Alaska residents do not appear to be listening. I talk with my kids about sex, and the responsibilites that go with it. Even though they are not quite at that stage yet (thank goodness), I'd rather they hear it from me so that I know the information is correct.
