yes you should have told her in more detail what you want
yes she could (not should) have asked you to emphasise on what you meant - as a military barber does she get many civilian 'do requests anyway..?
and if you really were dissatisfied you should have refused to pay, although your grounds for it were not solid that is what you are meant to do if unhappy at a hairdresser
