He's one of my favorites. It was a beautiful performance.
Now that Michelle Kwan's out of the picture (boo) I'm cheering for Irina Slutskaya in the women's competition. I watched her win worlds last year, after coming back from an illness and having to cope with her mother's illness and hoping to win money to pay for hospital bills--the combination of the story and her performance were inspiring.
I was very happy to see the Russian pair Totmiyanina and Marinin win as well. I remember last year at worlds when he dropped her...that was just horrible.
I've found the new crop of American figure skaters to be somewhat uninspiring, though I have to admit that Sasha Cohen has really matured to be a wonderful skater, comparable to Michelle Kwan and a worthy heir to her legacy once she retires, which will probably be soon (*sobs*). As for the men, I remained largely unimpressed with them until Evan Lysacek's free skate. That was beautiful enough by itself, but considering he went from 13th after the short program to a fourth-place finish and was fighting off stomach flu...well, words fail me, but let me just say he's my new favorite.
I'm not sure how the spots for the next Olympics are determined. I heard one commentator talk about how Michelle Kwan had earned us another spot by finishing fourth at worlds (which worlds? I'm pretty sure she didn't compete last year), but I don't get why the world championships would have anything to do with the Olympics.
But then, there are many things about figure skating competitions that I don't understand. I still don't quite get the new scoring system.
March sounds right for the world championships, though.
