but I don't get why the world championships would have anything to do with the Olympics.

But assuming it's anything like football, then they would be connected. The seedings for the qualification process are determined by the previous record in both qualification and the actual tournaments of both world cups and individual confederation (European, Asian etc.) cups. And the same is true of the individual confederations - they consider the world record as well as individual. And I figure you'd have a similarish system with the Olympics, since they're also only every 4 years.
