This morning a JAG came into my office (where I work alone, so I was naturally the only one there) and he tells me that he recently overheard, in a casual conversation, a sexual harassment incident (I informed one of his woman workers that she looked great in her outfit) that took place, but he's dropping it because it happened two months ago and he just found out about it recently. (And, by the way, he didn't bother to inform my chain of command of anything--that's just plain dirty pool!) Then he tells me to brush up on the Navy's sexual harassment policy and leaves.
OK, who the hell does this guy think he's kidding? "You look great in that outfit," is hardly the equivalent to, "Great body, baby; let's fuck!" And no woman would ever interpret such a compliment as being sexually harassive.
Here's the setup: The legal office has an obligation to right any wrongs they believe has happened; they are not going to allow a big, juicy bone of sexual harassment slip through their jowls just because it happened two eternally-long months ago (I know Selma, of all people, will wholeheartedly agree with me on this). The statute of limitations on all minor offenses is 2 years--2 months is just a drop in the bucket. Why, then, is this badass JAG really letting the case go, then?
In order for a harassment case to take off, it needs one of two things: either a statement from the victim saying she has been harassed or a statement from the offender admitting to harassing the victim. Well, I'm certainly not going to admit to something I haven't done, and if the only way the JAG finds out about this is--not by the victim reporting the incident, but--by overhearing a casual conversation two months after the fact, then it's painfully obvious that the victim doesn't feel she's been victimized (and that means she took the compliment as a compliment--wow! Shocker!).
So, without a statement from the victim or a confession from the offender, it's damn near impossible to prove that harassment has taken place. The prosecution doesn't have a leg to stand on, and whatever evidence they do have is too weak to withstand a court martial, so trying to bring me up on charges would just be a waste of time. The JAG is the only one here who has a problem with anything and he can't do anything about it.
Why, then, am I so pissed? Because the JAG couldn't let it go; he just had to get his version of justice in. He--a Commander of all things!--personally dropped by my office in an attempt to put the fear of God in me and then tried to make me believe that he gave me a lucky break because, "it happened two months ago and I just found out about it recently." Oh, please! The only case here is the one in his head, and he absolutely refuses to admit it!
