Just watched the Christmas Special, and I liked the way they handled it. Billie Piper seems MUCH better in the role, at this point, and it sounded like David Tenant was doing a mixed accent at the beginning, mixing his own and Christopher Eccleston. Funny enough, I saw a clip of Christopher Eccleston from his youth, and it reminded me of David Tenant. So, not a bad match, there.
Still not used to the new doctor after the Christmas special. Still weirded out a bit, but willing to take it on. I like that he's not sure of who he is. He knows all the same information, but has to determine what kind of man THIS encarnation is. It reminds me of Jadzia Dax. It's almost a symbiotic relationship... and if I think of it THAT way, I think I understand and can handle the change... It's just like Jadzia becoming Ezri. It creeped me out terribly, at first, because they still had the same memories, etc... but the personalities were mixed.
This encarnation definitely still cares about Rose, though, and she's been through a lot of emotions in this one Christmas Special. At first, she was afraid of the new doctor, confused about what had happened... but, now I think she's accepting. The same man is in there, just in a different form and he's still trying to figure it all out.
This version says some lines that 9 never would have... but I'm still trying to accept that as the symbiotic relationship. It's not a perfect match. It's not like a Sloveen slipping on a skin suit. This is a regeneration, a transformation. He's still basically the same person... ACK! I don't know why I'm struggling with this so terribly! I guess, because in the symbiotic relationships, like the one Jadzia Dax had, you never got together with someone a past encarnation had been with... hence why Ezri and Worf were not a match... since Worf was married to Jadzia. In this case, the symbiot is still in love with the same person...
I'm still confused by this whole regeneration bit... but, I'm going to TRY season (series) 2... Going to try it. I'm wary, though. I think Doctor 9 left an imprint on me... I do enjoy 10, but it's hard to carry over the lovestory with the two different versions, in my head... because he's not exactly the same...
But, I'll give the second series a try...
