Wtf?
The point is to provide an airport for the densely populated East Midlands region. It would be an arse if every person in England who wanted to catch a plane had to go to London to do so.

Additionally it is the second busiest freight airport in the UK (behind only Heathrow) and a hub for DHL and the Royal Mail, amongst others.
