CURRENT MESSAGE

I guess I'd have to agree there
If the quality of life for max is lower than it was, but he is in no pain and still walks around and sleeps a bit here and there, loses some weight but still remains reasonably healthy, then I suppose he's just getting old and he shouldn't be put down.

But gathering from what you said that he's getting lethargic, not eating, etc.. well if that's indication that he's in pain.. if he's in pain and not eating and not interested in playing or getting attention, then i'd say quality of life for him is pretty low. If in addition to that you have to keep patching him up with repeated vet visits, then perhaps it is indeed time to let max go.

But at least you're not hasty about it. In any case, always put your pet's needs before your own in this particular situation. I know some people that just keep on bringing their pets in and keep trying to patch him/her up because they simply do not want to let them go. So.. I'd say..let's see what happens in the next couple of days. If he cheers up again after this visit, then I'd say that's signal enough to give it another try.

Incidentally, my aunt's dog was going through a rough time where a tumor suddenly developed and the dog wasn't eating, kept silent and to herself and just wasn't interested in playing anymore. She just lay there. Now though, she's had surgery (pretty expensive too) and after about a week of recovery she's bouncing around the room again, active and happy as ever. I hope they can do something similar for max :)
