The reason I'd get stuck was because kailyard doesn't exist as a word in my vocabulary (neither does the concept of a kitchen garden exist to me outside of stately homes) - but I figure that these are things your friends would know about.

No, they wouldn't, which is why I chose that word. "Kailyard" isn't a mainstream American word. It's chiefly Scottish, eventually made it's way into the American language, and is so rarely used that you have to look in an unabridged dictionary just to find it.
And if you think the third clue was a breeze, that just means you have a higher IQ than the average person.
Oh, and I would never hide something in the cistern--that's just unsanitary! And too easy to reach. once they find it, they have to figure out how to get it, since the back of the tank it damn near right up against the wall. As for the kitchen ceiling, it's your standard tiled ceiling.
