Outside chance, I might be able to give some advice. Customising your journal could be as little as changing the comment links, it could be as much as completely redesigning where each part of the page is...
And S2 already exists. Has done for ages. The issue is that they're trying to get rid of S1, and do do this are trying to fit some S1ish overrides into S2. In theory a layout coded now in S2 ought to be fine after the change, as it shouldn't be effected. But they might also be taking the opportunity to add a few other fiddles (a fiddle a while back, for example, meant that my comments pages became broken in Firefox. Which wasn't much fun to fix, even though the eventual fix was the simplest thing ever.)
