HIcheck exactly what HIcheck exactly what needs to be utaepdd, is it itunes or your iphone firmware.if it is itunes then it is ok. you may update itunes to the latest version.if it is your firmware, make sure to hold shift before clicking restore, to get to use your own ipsw and not the latest from apple.Try following this guide to safely update to 4.2.1, if you can't anyway AFAIK, the latest version for 3g is 4.2.1 which is jailbroken and unlocked, double check that this is valid then you may restore your iphone to the latest version. good luck
