Re: Paid security software product reviews
McAfee is crap. Or well, the experiences I have with it at work. While it's running/scanning/doing *something*, I myself can't do anything. And I suppose I could shut down a few of my 20+ screens, but quite a few of those I need again afterwards anyway. And I get the idea that shutting them down doesn't make the McAfee waiting trauma last any shorter. And as it's work, I can't kill it myself. *snif*

Kaspersky is drool material. At least the little bit of Kaspersky anti hacker (sp?) I used to have on my previous laptop seemed work alright. Whenever something like Firefox would update, it would give a warning about it and asked you to allow or block the connection for the the update process. You pretty much know when a connection made by a program is for an update. (especially if you're trying to manually start the updating thingie)
Everything else is eh....well evil until proven otherwise and therefore you block it. Or something like that. :-P

AVG is crap. Okay, I should probably tone done a bit, as it usually (probably) does its job. Problem was that one time they issued a bad update. Caused AVG to think a vital bit of Windows was a virus and removing it. And then, surprise surprise, Windows wouldn't work anymore.

I think it was a second time during something similar that I got rid of AVG. Now I kinda avoid it like the plague. Since then I use Avira. It does show an "ooh look at me! please go buy the full version with lots of extra powah!"-kind of window when looking for updates, but that's not much of a bother to me.

For the rest I can't really tell if it's any good at doing anti-virus stuff or not. Could also just me being lucky at not having come across much bad thingies.

And even if in reality it's actually just crap, at least the scanning window makes me smile. It's named "Luke Filewalker". :-P

Spybot I don't really know. I think I've used it once or twice, and I *think* it's probably better than Ad-Aware(?), but somehow it doesn't feel cuddly enough. Err, I mean eh....oh I don't know! Probably haven't felt the urge to use it yet?

MalwareBytes was great in fixing a bug/virus once which Avira couldn't handle. But I think that was a trial version? Haven't used it since, so eh....meh. :-P

Currently using the freeware Ad-Aware Anniversary edition. Seems to work alright so far.

Slightly intrigued by ZoneAlarm. But again, it's only a free trial version? Or am I missing something? (probably ;-))

Do have a firewall program thingie, but can't remember the name. Haven't really done much with it, so it's probably not set up optimally yet. (If it even runs)
Interface so far doesn't seem very user friendly. Perhaps I'll try and find something better, if I have the time and can be bothered to do so. *Wonders if there's a Windows version of Firestarter* (probably not)

As for the rest of the programs mentioned, I can't really comment. Nod32 (sp?) seems okay, but I haven't tried it.

You can't be safe 100% all the time, but using a little bit of sense together with anti-virus -spyware -etc stuff will probably get you a long way. :-)

(Oh and yes, Norton is crap, too! ;-))

Now, as long as Google doesn't include / in their list of bad websites, I should be okay most of the time! :-P *runs*

Meh....Quack!

P.S. saving the text you typed before submitting a reply sometimes also helps. *pokes board thingie*

There are FOUR brain cells!
