So, I saw Twilight and you all know the review drama. Blah Blah Blah. Anyway, I realized that while I enjoyed the movie, the first half drove me nuts, and the movie was really not adapted in a way that made it accessible to non-fans. There were LOTS of nods to fans, perhaps too many, that went way over non-fans' heads. I know thanks to taking several people to see the film who had never read the books. They enjoyed the movie, but felt like they were outsiders looking in... Not good.
So, I'm working on my own adaptation of the second book, New Moon. I'm in phase 3 of my work. Phase 1 is going through the book and marking it to pieces (I had to buy a new copy since mine is on loan to a friend and I don't want to mark it up anyway). Phase 2 is breaking down all of those marks and writing on paper a basic outline of what stays and what goes. Phase 3 is going back over THAT list and writing things out a bit more, fleshing out scenes and deciding which dialogue from the book has a home in the movie. It's quite a lot, actually, but I've moved things around a LOT in my adaptation thus far to make it all fit. Book is 563 pages... a LOT has to go.
I haven't written someone else's characters in years. Last time it was Alias fan fiction back in seasons 2-3 (so, four or five years ago). Before that, I was 13 writing a screenplay for an ep of Star Trek: Voyager. So, this is definitely a great exercise for me, if nothing else. I have to see the movie as much as possible to get the voices down (twice in theater so far) since the actors put their own spin on the book characters... but it's a lot of fun! Hopefully, I'll like how it turns out, and I'll have a better understanding of how to do this if anyone ever hires me to. So far, it's a heap of fun! Though, I guess it helps that I love the subject matter.
Anyone ever had to deal with working on an adaptation? I'll take any advice I can get! :)
