...well, some of them, anyway, is that, on the inside, they're still children.
She's acting like a spoilt brat. Chances are, she's very afraid of her son moving out and living a fantastic, happy life - which would leave her without a son. Or it could be a number of other things - but the fact is, she's acting like a child.
My sympathetic side says that you should include her in your life - take her places, talk to her, spend time reassuring her of stuff so she doesn't feel so insecure.
But my realistic side knows that, sometimes, you can try and try and try to make someone happy - you can build your whole life around them if you want - and it still won't work. They just become worse.
In the end, when someone's going through stuff they can't deal with, only they can sort it out. She needs to do some soul-searching - only she can do it, though.
Short of casually leaving self-help books scattered around the house...there's not a lot you can do (c:
