Interesting little problem.
Sounds like a driver problem to me. Strange that HP update would cause the driverproblems, though.
I'd suggest figuring out what video hardware is in the laptop and then finding the correct drivers at the manufacturer's website. I've read in your post on that address you mentioned that you have an nividia videochip in your laptop. If you can figure out the exact type, you can download the drivers from nvidia.com. Before you install them, though, make sure to remove the old drivers first.
AGEIA reminds me of the company that used to be called Ageia PhysX. It was basically a method of handling part of the calculations required for convincing physics in games. It was bought by nvidia and integrated into nvidia's productlines as nvidia physx.
