Do you ever get calls where you pick up and there's no one there? Chances are that those calls are dialed by a telemarketing computer that records the day and time you picked up, so you can be called at a similar time later, knowing you will probably be home. If you ever get one of those calls or you get a recorded message of some sort, start hitting the # key very quickly. While continuing to do it doesn't hurt, 8 times should be sufficient. What that does is confuses the computer, which then boots your number off the list.
Then, there's the "Disconnection Answering Machine" trick. You can record the tones that are played before the "This number has been disconnected" message and play them on your answering machine before your message. Then, screen your calls for a while.
You can pick up the American tones (and more tips) at this site.
