Yeah, I know that experience all too well

I had a similar problem while trying to learn German a few years ago. The class was in an informal conversational setting, which I think only contributed to my difficulty of NOT thinking up Spanish responses. Then when I tried leanring Dutch, I had difficult not thinking of German responses, or past that, Spanish again.

When I started learning Finnish, French flooded back to my brain. Once I was doing a dictation in Finnish and I phoneticised an unfamiliar word into French spelling :0P I'm having that problem less with German, as I knew less Finnish, but for ages now my brain has tried to insist that anteksi is German for sorry, which it blatantly isn't.

Indeed, I don't see adiós, being the primary good-bye, being related to those of French or German. Perhaps when France was deciding who to trade good-byes with they turned to the east instead of the south. Probably when the Spanish were busy fighting off those moors.

Geh, how did I forget adiós! Of course that's it. And yeah, that's what I was trying to get at. Although I could think of the direct translation of auf wiedersehen/au revoir in Spanish, I knew that in terms of usage, it wasn't the translation. Adiós is what my brain wasn't letting me say.

When we moved from French speaking Switzerland to German speaking I was terribley annoyed that they still say merci there :0P One bloody German word I know and it's not in SwissGerman! Similarly I learnt to say "without cream" there, then discovered that the HochDeutsch word for cream is nothing like it :0P (Raum vs Sahne)

*Shakes fist at people who built that silly tower*
