Sorry this review is so late in coming, but I wasn't planning on posting it at all, since I didn't have net access when I saw it, but seeing how slow the board has become...
Batman Begins
Batman Begins is a typical superhero origins story told with flair and imagination. It doesn't do much that is new or radical, but when compared to the other batman movies in the series (especially the sequals), this one stands head and shoulders above the rest.
This batman movie starts with introducing us to Bruce Wayne, the man who would later transform himself into a vigilant with brains, brawn, and hightech gadgets. We see why he choose the image of the bat for his alter ego, his parents deaths, and his training in the ways of fighting crime at the hands of the league of shadows. Eventually he parts ways with them, his mentor, Henri Ducard, and their mysterious leader, Ra's Al Ghul, to fight corruption in Gotham City.
Despite lacking the stylized gothic themes of the first Batman movie, this one has a grim and dark tone. Credit for this goes to director, Christopher Nolan. This is in keeping in line with the comic books, where batman walked a thin line between vigilant and hero. Also noticably (and thankfully) absent in this movie are the campy and fetishist elements that marked the latter Batman movies.
The acting is for the most part really good, but should we have expected anything less with a cast led by Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Ken Watanabe, Katie Holmes, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Wilkinson? If there is a criticism of the acting, it is that there is very little chemistry between Katie Holmes and Christian Bale. I never once believed these two were in love.
Overall, this is a strong reboot for a franchise that should have been accorded better but wasn't. Technically this isn't really a prequal to the first movie since many of the elements are different, Here's hoping that if Christopher Nolan gets to go ahead and make the triology he envisioned, that those movies are just as good as this one. If they are, they will be well worth waiting for.
