Actually..
You can get contacts for astigmatism. I went in recently for my yearly appointment. I decided to try a pair of contacts (for occasional use) and the doc mentioned that the pair she picked out wouldn't correct it, but if I wanted to go to full time useage I'd need to pay more, and use a different brand.
I that night trying out contacts wasn't fun and I had a hard time getting them on. I decided not to get them after all. I like the simplicity of glasses (at least in locating them).
I forgot my prescription, but I've lost my glasses on a camping trip. A couple of people at store were amazed I was able to not walk into a tree on the way back because of the #'s. I've found one person on campus, that has a prescription close to mine. We found this out because we challenged each other that we each had the worst perscription of the group we were with. It was a funny moment when he tryed mine out. here's a nice blurb, on flying:
