The minimum wage payable in Australia is $467.40 per week or $12.30 per hour. The ACTU in February 2005, on behalf of Australia's 1.6 million low paid award workers has made aplication to increase this minimum rate to $494 per week or $13 per hour. One in six working people rely on theses cases to improve their living standards. The minimum or basic wage concept was established by the Industrial Court in 1907 in the Harvester case. After nearly 100 years, employers are now calling for the abolition of the system and a reduction in the rights and conditions of Australia's workers
