that hereditary is the most imrtpoant predisposing factor for major depression. I know this to true, because depression certainly runs in my family. Signs of major depression involve loss of interest and pleasure, withdrawal from activities, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, anxiety, and shame. Physical symptoms involve unexplained weight gain or weight loss, disturbed sleep, decreased energy, poor eye contact, monosyllabic speech, and indifference to pleasure or joy. It is thought that neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine play a role in major depression. There are medications that help with neurotransmitters. For example, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have proven to be helpful to those suffering major depression in my family. Major depression can result from certain diseases such as Cushing's disease, chronic heart disease, and cancer. In more severe cases of major depression, electroconvulsive therapy and the use of antipsychotic drugs might be necessary.
