'But those types of classes really don't exist in public high schools. (n/t)' posted by Admiral Memo - 22/12/2005, 06:03:00

CURRENT MESSAGE

Of course not.
High school is meant to be a basic grounding of the knowledge you need to (a) function in society and (b) succeed in higher education. If you had all the classes in high school that you have in college, there would be no point in going to college anymore.

And since those classes don't exist in high school, neither are there teachers available qualified to teach them. Your high school biology teachers certainly aren't qualified to do so. Why impose this burden on them when they're going to do a half-hearted and half-assed job of it anyway? What's next; are we going to require teachers to get a whole new degree in Intelligent Design so they can be "highly qualified" under No Child Left Behind? Teachers in this country have to bear a heavy enough burden as it is; we shouldn't impose more meaningless standards on them. What we should do is teach students critical thinking skills and let them sniff out the bull**** on their own; a skill in which high school-aged students are already far more skilled than we give them credit for.
