Chapter 16 was extremely inretesting, especially atopic dermatitis. I did not know that it was the most common skin disease. I learned that eczema affects up to 15% of children and about half of these children will lose symptoms by the time they reach adulthood. It was also inretesting to learn the cause of atopic dermatitis is still unknown, but is associated with allergens and asthma. I also found it inretesting that atopic dermatitis affects infants, teens, and adults differently. Infants primarily have symptoms around the neck, ears, face, and torso. They also have symptoms on the tops of their feet and outside of their elbows, while teenagers and adults have symptoms primarily in creases of the skin like behind the knee.Another condition that interested me was the herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1). I had no idea this affected 85% of the population. I was surprised to learn that stress, getting a fever or cold, trauma to the skin, and sun exposer can cause the virus to present itself. I did know that many illnesses lay dormant in the body until provoked, but I must admit, I have always been a little worried about that in me and my family members. I did know you could contract this virus from exposing yourself to a person who has a herpetic lesion, but I did not know that you could still contract the virus from a person whose skin appears normal. Fortunately, I have never had a “cold sore†and this chapter will make me think twice before sharing a drink.
