In this module I found Bulimia Nervosa to be very itrenesting for me. Like anorexics, bulimics are excessively concerned with their body weight and shape. Bulimics binge by eating a bunch of food in a small period of time and then turn around and rid themselves of it by either the misuse of laxatives, induced vomiting or diuretics. They may also do rigorous exercise and dieting after a binge to prevent gaining weight. Most bulimics body weight stays normal so it makes it easy for them to hide their illness. The side effects of bulimia to the body can be devastating. Their tooth enamel erodes from the stomach acid and digestive enzymes from vomiting and can cause injury and inflammation to the esophagus and salivary glands. This can cause some to eventually lose their teeth. They can also cause themselves severe muscle cramping and abnormal heart rhythms caused by lower blood potassium levels. Severe potassium loss can result in death. Bulimics are aware of their behavior and feel guilt and shame. They are generally prone to depression and alcohol or drug abuse. Bulimics are more likely to talk about their illness and seek treatment.Suicide was another topic I found itrenesting. I lost a friend years ago from suicide and I have yet to really understand it. Suicide is almost always associated with mental illness. People see suicide when they are feeling helpless and see no other way out of the chaos in their life. The risks for suicide can be substance abuse, family history of suicide, sexual abuse, and impulsive or aggressive character. Suicide is more than four times more common in men than in women, but women tend to attempt it more often. Suicidal behavior can occur when people suffer major losses and stressful situations such as divorce, etc. Some warning signs of suicide can include withdrawal, talk of death, giving away possessions, and sudden shifts in moods. Suicide is devastating to family, friends, and caregivers; they commonly blame themselves to some extent for not preventing the suicide.
