S939 offers the best upgrade potential right now...
As it supports both cheap 64 bit semprons and top-end FX or dual-core models.

S754 is already disowned by AMD, you won't see any better processors than what are already out there.

However, rumour has it that AMD will be introducing their newest socket (yes, another one) in Q2/3 next year. What that means for S939, we have yet to see, but bear in mind AMD committed to at least a 4000+ model in S754 and never delivered.

Maybe it's worth waiting after all.
