- Benchmarks show Athlons out-perform comparably rated Pentium 4 processors.
- When compared clock-for-clock, the performance gap is obscene (for instance, AMD have yet to exceed 3GHz clock speeds)
- Athlons run cooler, thus requiring less noisy or expensive cooling apparatus (is the thermal envelope for the Pentium D's now at 130W or did they keep under 110W?) Either way, AMD's maximum rated power draw is 90W, and Cool 'n' Quiet technology is more effective than Intel's equivalent (ok, I don't have objective evidence for that claim).-
- Athlons typically overclock better and memory timings can be tweaked more effectively due to the on-die memory controller.
- Mid-range Athlons are typically significantly cheaper than a comparably rated Pentium 4.
- However, AMD are being somewhat alienating to their customer base by switching processor socket so many times recently. Intel didn't do much better with the thermal issues causing them to respecify LGA775, but at least the older processors are still forwards-compatible.
And on an ethical note, I find Intel's (alleged) business practices very unappealing. So supporting AMD hits Intel twice, once for not buying Intel and once for supporting AMD :)
YMMV.
Why do you ask?
