So, this is the first picture that I've coloured using my new mouse (after dropping and breaking my old one of 7 years) and so I chose something simple to do while I get used to it. So far it's ok for the larger things but when it come to the fiddly little bits I don't seem to have the same control as I did with my old mouse.
They're both cheap-o $10.00 Logictech (old one was a M-UV96 and the new one is an M90) and the differences in the two are minimal when it comes to overall shape. The new one has a slightly straighter sides while the old tapers more and the software of the new one vs the old is significantly more responsive... but that's what seems to be making all the difference when it comes to the small bits. It's simply harder to make an accurate selection and to control the brush strokes.
I've gotten into the control panel and physically slowed the response time of the mouse through the settings and that's helped but I guess it'll just be up to time and practise while I get used to the new mouse...
What all this means is that this isn't what I'd call the best picture that I've ever done by a long shot.... but what can you do..? *shrugs* Just keep at it until I get back up to speed and familiarity with the new mouse.
UPDATE ON THE MOUSE SAGA...
The saga of the busted favourite and beloved mouse continues...
I'd taken the new Logitech M90 mouse that I'd used to colour the above picture back to the shop and instead bought a Genius mouse that was almost the same shape and size as my busted one. But...
So I was there flatting away on a new picture and while things were going ok, again the new mouse that I'd bought just wasn't 100% "right"... again with the small fiddly details. Much better than the previous mouse I'd bought but still not my old buddy of 7 years.
So I'm thinking... what exactly happened last week? I dropped the mouse off the desk, and it knocked the chair on the way down and not very hard at that, and then the left button didn't always work, sometimes but only one click in every five or so... Since that's the case maybe it's not broken inside but something has simply shifted or moved out of place? Everything certainly looked ok at a glance inside and nothing fell off or rattled that shouldn't be doing so
Opening up the mouse for what must be the 20th time since that day, I dug out the magnifying glass that I got for my 4th birthday to have a closer look. That's right... this magnifying glass is 40 years old and a real 'sherlock holmes' kind of magnifying glass at that! (I hate to throw anything away or lose stuff and yep, I *still* had this close to hand! I subscribe to the idea that eventually everything can have a use and purpose somehow. My wife's the opposite though - she's a 'we can buy a new one if we need it' type of person. It makes life "interesting" around here)
Studying the mouse and where the button connects with the circuit connector inside I notice a small but clear dent on the underside of the button which was exactly the same size and position as the connector bump bit that it clicks onto inside and which registers the electronic action from the mechanical. Over 7 years and well, what must be a BILLION clicks later I'd actually worn a dent in the plastic!
Could it be *that* simple I thought.. Just a new piece of plastic to cover that dent and it'll work ok..?
Digging into my old spares and junk box from my scale modelling days (haven't built one for 10 years but I still have my tools and stuff here ready to go - told you I never throw stuff away...) I found a couple of flat scraps of varying thicknesses and cut out a small square from each. Glueing them in with the scale model glue which surprisingly for 10 years hadn't dried up in the tube (yay for Humbrol glue - I highly recommend the product!) the first 2 were far too thick and the button wouldn't work at all. Scouting around the room for anything else at hand, and being slightly frustrated as having just recently moved house my piles-o-crap were pretty thin on the ground, I spied the packet my new mouse came in. Clear, and what's even better, THIN plastic! Yeah!...Cutting a bit off I glued it in and holding my breath, put the mouse back together and started clicking on stuff.
IT WORKED.
And not only that it worked again and again and again. Back to normal! Though...If anything it's probably a little *too* sensitive now... I sometimes get some strange movements out of it and selections can be trickier than I remember from a week ago.
So here I am, back using my (now) franken-mouse again... well until the next time that it breaks and maybe then it'll be for good for all I know. At any rate I have the new Genius mouse waiting in the drawer here for when it does.
So now I'm off to find a paper clip and some silly-putty to build a nuclear bomb or something that's more of a challenge for the likes of McGyver and me...
cheers
