It's caused by degeneration of neurons in the brain, which then stop sending messages to the muscles, which leads to muscle atrophy. What actually causes the neuron degeneration is currently not really understood. So they can't treat it properly cause they don't really know what the root cause is. One of the theories currently is that yes the immune system somehow kills the neurons, and it does play a part later in the disease, but it's not the established cause. It's also not as fatal as your post indicated, although it is fatal (and extremely devastating in it's lead up effects), it's not immediately so. Arguably the most famous ALS victim, Stephen Hawking, developed the disease somewhere getting on 50 years ago...

No I don't think that is correct in general, in general E is correct, if you can find the root cause you're 80% the way to getting it sorted.
I mean, come on! Haven't you seen any episodes of House! Man do they go through a lot to find the root cause of something...and when they do...well, it's the end of the episode!
