There are a few cases where the doctors know exactly what the problem is, but also have no clue how to treat it. (That doesn't seem to be the case in this instance, but in general, I'm saying.)
I'm mainly thinking of ALS here. The doctors know exactly what's wrong: your immune system is attacking your muscles and nerves as it would an infection. But there is no cure currently. All current treatments are based on either relieving pain or suppressing the immune system to slow down the degradation. The problem with the second part, though, is that it makes you susceptible to all sorts of other diseases.
