Well

So I'm guessing you'd start from boot up with the laptop monitor in use (but if not, just extend to #1, but keep #2 as primary):
Right Click on desktop >
Display Properties >
Settings >
Select external monitor (click the # 2)> Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor (tick)
With the external monitor selected tick "Use this device as the primary monitor" (start menu / task bar will be on this monitor).
Select each monitor and set the resolution (they are independent of each other)
Apply/Ok, and you're done
If you've got nVidia graphics or some other they can usually do other things (such as clone etc), i've found they're more trouble then they're worth, easiest to stick with the windows settings to handle it. The only other thing is that they secondary monitor won't actually have a task bar (it will function correctly, ie you'll be able to maximise windows etc, but all the apps would be displayed on the taskbar on the primary monitor). Theres a few programs that can give you the functionality of a task bar on your second monitor, the best i've found is Ultramon (start menu / system tray is still only on the primary monitor, but theres a task bar for selecting apps etc on the secondary monitor).
Who's going to clear away the bodies...that's what I want to know.
