They probably caught it early.
If the appendix ruptures and you get peritonitis, then you're pretty much in it for the long haul.

By the way, Michael Shanks who played Daniel on Stargate? Remember that season finale where the team is up on a spaceship and Daniel is stuck at central command with an appendix surgery? Well that's cuz the actor had an appendix surgery. The episode previous to that was crystal scull or something, where Daniel is sort of a ghost (out of phase or something) and he's actually got a different skin tone in the episode, caused by the infection.
