They operate on you, then usually put a drain in your stomach, let it stay in for a day and let you recover to the point where they think any reasonable danger of infection is gone, then remove the drain and let you go home. Usually the whole thing takes somewhere between 24 and 48 hours.
If you get an infection, though, it will take a lot longer, to the point where weeks or a month are not uncommon.
