One of his, the professors' friends (who lived at least most of their life in France, I guess, not sure of all of the details) was at the airport in New York City, and their flight was delayed by 3 hours.
So his friend casually calls him up and asks him if he wants to go sightseeing in New York for a bit (I imagine this took place before 9/11).
According to my professor, it took him awhile to explain that, while Oneonta was still well within the state of New York, it was still a good 5 hour drive for him to get down to the city.
