I was chatting it up with one of the French dignitaries and he asked me where I from. I told him I was from here, meaning Virginia. He asked, "Virginia Beach?" and I said, "No, Virginia." He asked me, "Where in VA?" and I said, "Roanoke." He asked me where that was and, as my French skills don't go that far, I drew a quick map of VA and marked off Virginia Beach on the east side of VA and Roanoke on the west side of VA with an arrow going from Virginia Beach to Roanoke. Then I said, "Virginia Beach," pointed to the arrow, "4 hours...Roanoke." You know. Indicating that Roanoke was 4 hours away. And the next question he asked was, "Is Roanoke in Virginia Beach?"
It was all I could do to maintain my composure. I understand that our cities and states are larger than they are in Europe, but I don't know a single city that's 250 miles wide.
