(That's for the fake N/Ting.)
As for the character encoding - is there a good reason you don't just autodetect the relevant local encoding? Or does it feel big and clever to make strings of garbled symbols when you know only you can see what they should be :0P (Of course, it's a matter of two mouseclicks for me to change my encoding to check what you're saying ;0)
Did you know that mu is a common key on quite a lot of European layouts? But not in the UK, alas. Though I'm thinking of switching my layout to UK extended. Right now it's no problem for me to do áéíóú (they're AltGr + vowel on UK keyboards) and I know alt codes for ßèéäåöøûü by heart. But whenever I need to do a different accented character, or a capital one I have to fiddle around the bounds of what I know. UK extended would allow me to turn various keys into dead keys by use of AltGr. Which seems like a good compromise - I hate automatic dead keys (AZERTY keyboqrds, argh) but having to hold AltGr to activate them is not so different to having to hold alt down for alt codes. Except that AltGr+"+O is easier to remember than Alt+0214 ;0)
