I would think that cats that are more 'sure' of themselves would be happy to just wander off chasing things etc, and them find themselves lost... I would think that a cat thats less independent, wouldn't be too keen on just running off, and would on their own want to stick close at first...
You could give it a test though, and say let it out by itself, and just watch (say from inside) to see it its very willing to wander off... (and then you can always give it that dryfood shake test, every cat i know comes running when they hear their food *nods*), and that might set your mind at ease a little...
Who's going to clear away the bodies...that's what I want to know.
