You'd have to decide in advance what search terms you want your students to use, then get the sites google links to unlocked. And then tell the students precisely what to search for... way to ruin the point huh.
Sounds like a complete disaster, but at least they've already somewhat realised. I hope the trial stays dropped.
It definitely sounds like more discipline is needed from the teachers.
The blocks on our network at uni were very restrictive - they whitelisted ports, essentially. And then there were also content filters in place. I didn't so much mind the port restrictions, though not having irc or ftp was irritating. But the fact that they also meant you couldn't make a secure connection was VERY annoying. It's ok on Amazon where you can choose an unsecure sign-in, but on other sites...
It reached the height of stupidity when I started seeking work experience (required for my course) and got myself a nice sensible gmail address to use for that purpose. Lo and behold, gmail requires a secure connection to access. And thus I couldn't check my email! Fortunately by this point I'd worked out that you could make a secure connection from the computer suites in the library/LRC, just not from your own bedrooms in halls. So I redirected all incoming email into my sevspace account and would use a campus computer if I needed to send an email. But it was still a complete faff.
