eventually we'll be left with essentially nothing... and we'll have to go back to *gasp shock horror* BOOKS!!!!
we can't ftp at all, can't access youtube, can't access most proxy sites, no msn, can't access myspace/facebook etc etc. they even blocked hotmail at one stage until an uproar from staff reversed it.
all to stop the kiddies doing stuff they shouldn't be doing in class- but it affects staff as well. Mind you if the STAFF were more vigilant accross the edu dept and stuck to the rules and made the kids get off the sites and punished them if they kept at it, and had at least *some* sort of computer classroom discipline rather than just using internet access as a babysitting lesson as most seem to do, then we wouldn't have this problem at all....!
They blocked yousendit.com and the like at one stage but then some staff somewhere sent some mega files via the edu depts official MS Outlook email servers and crashed the lot for 28 hours. So they enabled it again! :+P
They're actually talking about "white listing' the internet at schools - which means that the blacklist the ENTIRE internet and then teachers have to lodge an application to get various websites 'opened' again for a limited time so kids can do their work - then they get shut down again. That'll be the end of the internet use in schools if they do so. They've trialed it at 6 schools last year and they pretty much had quiet and dusty computer rooms as a result - tens of thousands of dollars of PC and stuff just lying idle for 90% of the time. So they dropped the trial, but haven't given up on the idea yet...
