I never said I was blind. There were details of our business relationship that I've been noting as warning signs.
1. Her profile at Roommates.com was only up long enough for me to look at it. When it disappeared and I asked her why, she told me she had another profile on another website, so she deleted that one.
2. She asked me to immediately remove my profile so there would be no other takers. An odd thing to request, especially at the greeting stage of our relationship.
3. Then there is her odd way of using the word "soonest." IE: "I hope to meet you soonest." She claimed to be born and raised in California with her American father and African mother. Giving her legitimacy the benefit of the doubt, I reasoned this as cultural influence from her mother, but I remained on the alert.
4. When she told me where she was from, she said "Usa, Ca." My skepticism piqued at this, as no one from the States would ever say anything like that (they'd mention city and state, only).
5. Then when it came time to send me the money, she used an agent of hers in the States to send it. (This would be to explain why the money was being sent from Texas and not Africa). Fine. Whatever. Since I don't own several businesses, I can't say that someone wouldn't have an overseas agent.
6. Then when that money was lost in the mail (the package was sent through DHL, and unless she has someone on the inside manipulating the system, the package at least existed as she gave me the tracking number and I was able to track it) it was sent to me again through UPS, but this time from someone in Long Beach, CA. What really raised the red flag, though, was the fact that instead of one check, I received 4 money orders, and the 4 money orders were from 4 different people in 4 different cities and states. Common sense says that if one person is going to send 4 money orders, then only one person and one city/state will be on them.
7. When the bank found them to be fraudulent, I sent her an e-mail telling her to have the money wired to me. She IMed me afterwards and when I told her the same thing, she didn't respond. When I told her she was being awfully quiet, she logged out.
I can't wait to see how this ends up.
