The topics in Module
The topics in Module 12 I found ienretsting were osteoporosis and carpal tunnel syndrome. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by porous bone that is abnormally fragile and susceptible to fracture. I didn’t know eighty percent of those affected by osteoporosis are women. Risk factors for osteoporosis include being female, advanced age, and having a small frame. Other risk factors are low bone mass, Vitamin D deficiency, family history and sedentary lifestyle. Osteoporosis can quietly become advanced because no symptoms accompany bone loss until bones weaken enough to fracture. Osteoporosis is diagnosed using a patient history and bone density tests. There is no cure for osteoporosis, so prevention is strongly recommended. The second topic I found of interest was carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition of the hand and it effects up to 10% of working population in the United States. Women are three times more likely to develop CTS than in men. Risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome are performance of repetitive manual tasks such as knitting, driving, typing, and piano playing. Carpal tunnel syndrome is characterized by numbness or tingling in the hand but progresses to pain that can radiate up the arm and shoulder. The pain is most severe at night. CTS can cause difficulty with doing simple task requiring finger movement. Diagnosis of CTS is confirmed by an electromyogram. Electromyogram is a test that measures the velocity of sensory and motor nerve condition. The most common surgery for relieving carpal tunnel symptoms involves cutting the transverse carpal ligaments to relieve pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. This procedure generally provides permanent relief without affecting hand movement or strength.
