What you do is install that, and it gives you the ability to block things that you come across on the internet.
You can also fetch a text file which has a list of known advertisements already blocked and load it into AdBlock. There is an option to do that from within Firefox when you have AdBlock Plus installed -
go to Tools > Add-ons. Then click on the button OPTIONS mentioned underneath Adblock Plus. In the menu choose Filters > Add filter subscription.
Then subscribe to a bunch and voila.
