I think Opera competes well with Firefox for a good UI and it doesn't fare badly in the development cycle.
It also competes well with IE in it's insatiable appetite for RAM.
It's in a league of it's own starting up though. IE's open as soon as I can blink, Firefox less than a second behind. On my system, Opera makes it to the party around 8 to 10 seconds later.
