This is a sanitary pad/sanitary towel/sanitary napkin/menstrual pad. It goes into your underwear and sticks to it with a layer of post-it-notes-like glue:

This is a tampon. It goes into your vagina and stays in there due to the physiological shape and the muscles and is removed by pulling the string.
