and Sonic Youth is cool, but the thing is, they are very much alive but I'd wager all pushing 60 now. Sonic Youth is rad but it isn't the 80s or mid90s aornmye. It isnt even the 00s aornmye. I think what the other dude went was, mainstream music with credibility is few and far between (which it is ) and that it makes it even harder for bands such as those you listed to even have a shot. Not to change course completely, but ie. nation of ulysses broke up cuz of the nirvana boom more or less.
