I have had very good
I have had very good luck with Belkin routers, but ohetrs on here will tell you they are junk. Just get a good name brand router. You will likely want to get a wireless router that is at least an 802.11G, and an 802.11N is even better, but you will pay for the higher speed of the N router. Make sure the cards or adapters you buy are the same brand as the router if possible. You can buy the same adapter for all three computers, just check that it has Vista as well as Xp drivers. You would need to set up the router first, using a hard wire connection to the main PC. Once you have the router set up with your security settings and encryption key, you can go totally wireless if you want.I use USB adapters that just plug into any USB port on the computer. The brand I bought came with and extension cable to allow the adapter to be up away from the case of the computer so the metal would not interfere with the signal. You would run the install disk FIRST and then plug in the adapter when told to. It will detect your router and ask if you want to connect. You then enter the encryption key and your should go online. Do this for each machine and your ready to set up the total network. After each machine can see the router, and each other. You will need to turn on file sharing on each machine. You will also have to go into My Computer and click on the drives you want to be able to share between one computer and another on your network. Once all that is done, you can set up any computers that do not have printers attached to print out of one that does. You do this through the Printer set up wizard, by requesting a network printer. You then just have to load the drivers into the computer for the printer and you should be able to print from that computer over the LAN to the other computers printer. ( Both must be turned on and running.)Another option for printing is to get a router that contains a print server. This will have a USB port for your printer in addition to the ethernet ports and modem port. You can set up the printer at the same location as the router, and all the computers in the net can install that printer.
